Big Data is a Big Deal

“Big Data is a Big Deal.” That was the title of a blog post from President Obama’s White House a little over 12 years ago, along with an accompanying press release about a $200M new big data initiative. The vision was optimistic, the tech elite were feeling all tingly, and universities began churning out data science grads in much higher numbers.

Since then, a lot has been said about big data, and many large corporations have made use of their own very large data sets to help them make science-backed, well-informed decisions. In today’s corporate world, being able to afford and make good use of a data science employee is table stakes.

What has not happened with the mountain of public data that is available to us now and was similarly available then is achieving the ambition stated in the top of the announcement linked above: “help solve some the Nation’s most pressing challenges.”

Still a long way to go…

I wish we could say all the work was done and our platform is a shining example of digital perfection, but we’re just launching…today! So we have a lot of work still to do.
